Mothering Magazine Sponsored Chat with Dr. Jay Gordon. In the middle of his residency training, pediatrician Jay Gordon took an unusual step. Deciding that he needed greater knowledge about nutrition, vitamins, and alternative medicine in order to practice medicine the way he wanted to, Dr. Gordon took a Senior Fellowship in Pediatric Nutrition at Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York City. After his residency at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, Dr. Gordon joined the teaching attending faculty at UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Intensely interested in infant nutrition and breastfeeding, Dr. Gordon is the first male physician to sit for and pass the International Board of Lactation Certification Exam. He has served on the Professional Advisory Board of La Leche League for twenty years. Dr. Gordon treats patients at Santa Monica, California.

21:15:26 Webmama_Tina rainsmom, you ready mama?
21:15:32 rainsmom Hi...every 2-6 wks, my 6yo dd gets high fever, 101-106!  no other symptoms, lasts for 1-4days.  is this normal?  should I test her for something specific.  she isnt vaxed
21:15:39 Webmama_Tina ah ha
21:15:55 Webmama_Tina current chatter: rainsmom ... upcoming chatters: sienna1, aembrescia, my2boys00-03, amyirony, ElijahsMommy
21:16:12 Jay Gordon There is a \recurrent fever syndrome\" which I've seen twice.  Benign.  But .  .  ."
21:16:32 Jay Gordon This is almost always just a set of viruses rotating through the classroom and community
21:16:53 Jay Gordon How long?
21:17:01 Jay Gordon Has she been having these fevers?
21:17:09 rainsmom how long its been going on.......a year
21:17:21 Jay Gordon BTW, vaccination has nothing to do with this.  Docs, of course, try to frighten you
21:17:42 Jay Gordon Everything else OK>  Have a doc you trust?
21:17:47 rainsmom She ISNT vaxed....otherwise I would be worried.  but 106 is high!
21:18:10 rainsmom not really.....a naturopath, but he is moving away.  I do have a ped, but he's not you
21:18:31 Jay Gordon Ear thermometer?  Not very accurate.  But, she does need an eval if you have a ped you trust
21:18:58 rainsmom no ear, oral thermometer. should I ask for specific tests?
21:19:18 Jay Gordon if she's healthy in all other ways, there's not much to worry about.  Still, monthly very high fevers should be looked into
21:19:43 Jay Gordon Screening panel:  CBC, sed rate, and maybe a viral panel
21:19:48 rainsmom even tho i nursed for 3yrs, i worry about her immune system.
21:20:07 Jay Gordon worth the trouble but still almost definitely coincidence and nothing ominous
21:20:43 Jay Gordon worth the tests for peace of mind, too
21:21:00 rainsmom thanks doc!  that helps!  should I let fever run its course......i do warm sponge baths and tylenol if body aches
21:21:23 Jay Gordon Again, there is a rare (benign) recurrent fever syndrome which people treat with prednisone (what else?!)
21:21:56 Jay Gordon a temp that high is usually too uncomfortable to go untreated:  baths, belladona, ferum phos and Tyl if you need it
21:22:17 rainsmom yikes! prednisone?  ill be looking for something on the natural spectrum
21:22:30 rainsmom have been doing belladonna as well
21:22:36 my2boys00-03 ?
21:22:39 Jay Gordon of course--and, the PRD doesn't really change much
21:22:52 rainsmom thank you doc!
21:23:06 Jay Gordon welcome
21:23:13 Webmama_Tina sienna, you'er up
21:23:16 sienna1 My dd is almost 9 months old, pretty much ebf, has about 2-3 tblsps of food  daily.  We cosleep.  DD is tired and needs to go to bed at 7 or so, but can't stay asleep without being in our bed with me...same with nap time.  How can i help her get the sleep
21:23:25 Webmama_Tina  current chatter: sienna1 ... upcoming chatters: aembrescia, my2boys00-03, amyirony, ElijahsMommy
21:23:43 sienna1 she needs when i can't sleep with her...i feel terrible just letting her collapse from exhaustion
21:23:53 Jay Gordon Fevers, as you've alluded to, help fight an illness.  But, 104+ usually stops a child from eating, drinking sleeping.  Plus, it's impossible to evaluate a child that hot
21:24:22 sienna1 i feel like she needs to have some sleep routine....otherwise she gets very overtired and miserable.
21:24:24 Jay Gordon Umm .  .  . I recommend doing exactly what you're doing
21:24:35 Jay Gordon Yes, a routine is a great idea:
21:24:44 Jay Gordon Song, bath, book, nurse
21:24:55 Jay Gordon shorter than you might be doing right now
21:25:25 Jay Gordon I like routines but I'm not a fan of scheduled sleep
21:25:36 Jay Gordon and cosleeping a FAR superior to anything else
21:25:38 sienna1 the thing is i have another child and i can't lay with her at 7 pm
21:25:43 Jay Gordon and MUCH safer
21:25:44 sienna1 all night
21:25:45 pawprint ?
21:25:49 Jay Gordon aaaah
21:25:52 Jay Gordon Dad?
21:26:05 bruingrad ?
21:26:08 Jay Gordon Read w older child while lying w younger?
21:26:33 sienna1 okay...i guess the question is ...is it harmful for her to be sort of chronically overtired
21:26:37 Jay Gordon try starting a routine at the right time each night
21:26:58 sienna1 we do have a routine, and she goes down beautifully, but wakes after 25 mins or so
21:27:10 Jay Gordon No, babies and toddlers are for the most part \good animals\"  They get all the sleep, calories and activity they need if we let them"
21:27:10 sienna1 and can't get resettled without me staying with her.
21:27:17 Webmama_Tina  current chatter: sienna1 ... upcoming chatters: aembrescia, my2boys00-03, amyirony, ElijahsMommy, pawprint, bruingrad
21:27:36 sienna1 okay...so if i just get her up and try again later...i'm not going to do her harm.
21:27:43 sienna1 she will make sure she gets the sleep she needs?
21:27:48 sienna1 naps too?
21:27:58 Jay Gordon Have a look at my sleep modification program on my site.  Actually, I like what you're doing better than what I recommend, but you may have to change what you're doing for the sake of the family
21:28:08 Jay Gordon No, no harm
21:28:42 sienna1 great. thanks.  i did some research recently into the fact that different cultures (japan for instance) have very different expectations...very un \wisebluth\""
21:28:54 Jay Gordon FoolishBluth
21:29:15 Jay Gordon I like his book least of all of the pop sleep books.  Get McKenna!
21:29:16 sienna1 and i realized that sleep needs, if they were biological, would be the same all over the world
21:29:17 nydancer226 ?
21:29:24 Jay Gordon Yes
21:29:38 sienna1 and i wanted to hit myself in the head with that book!!!1
21:29:41 sienna1 duh!!!
21:30:07 sienna1 does your site have nap tips too?
21:30:21 Jay Gordon Yes, but it's tricky
21:30:26 sienna1 will get mckenna.
21:30:31 Webmama_Tina  current chatter: sienna1 ... upcoming chatters: aembrescia, my2boys00-03, amyirony, ElijahsMommy, pawprint, bruingrad, nydancer226
21:30:33 Jay Gordon Parenting is tricky .  . .
21:30:49 Jay Gordon and sleep is usually the toughest dilemma of them all
21:31:02 sienna1 dunno, breastfeeding was pretty tricky to learn!!
21:31:06 Jay Gordon and the reason people have trouble finding the answer is that there's no answer for everyone
21:31:15 sienna1 thanks very much for your help.
21:31:28 Webmama_Tina aembrescia, you're next! :)
21:31:31 aembrescia i have an 8.5 month old boy-breastfed, cosleeper, worn in a sling 20 lbs who has no interest in crawling.  loves to stand up and walk around holding on to my hands.  when we put him on his hands and knees he generally collapses onto his belly complaining
21:31:42 Webmama_Tina  current chatter: aembrescia ... upcoming chatters: my2boys00-03, amyirony, ElijahsMommy, pawprint, bruingrad, nydancer226
21:31:46 Jay Gordon welcome!  Please remember, no one knows what your kids need better than you do
21:31:58 Jay Gordon Normal
21:32:07 Jay Gordon Some kids never crawl one bit
21:32:11 aembrescia what is your opinion on this?  i have heard that non crawlers could be more apt to be dyslexic, dyspraxic etc...
21:32:13 Jay Gordon and they're not all dyslexic!
21:32:16 Jay Gordon or damged
21:32:20 Jay Gordon damaged
21:32:35 Jay Gordon (our answers crossed!)
21:32:46 aembrescia so not to worry if i give him the opportunity?
21:33:08 Jay Gordon absolutely nothing to worry about
