13:03:46 Webmama_Tina ok...lisa, anything you would like to add to that intro on you?
13:03:56 Webmama_Tina and WELCOME, by the way!
13:04:00 Webmama_Tina we're so glad to have you here!
13:04:43 SandraMort (ok, so that was only an hour ago, but still!)
13:04:47 Lisa Samet, N.D. I have 3 kids Zoe 7, Zachary 5 and Benjamin 2 and am a 7 year reader of Mothering
13:05:42 Webmama_Tina ok sandra has our first question
13:05:46 SandraMort Yay!
13:05:54 Webmama_Tina but did you have something you wanted to present first lisa?
13:06:03 Webmama_Tina sandra i think she has a little intro on homeopathy
13:06:17 Webmama_Tina lol ok
13:06:18 Webmama_Tina :)
13:08:42 Lisa Samet, N.D. Homeopathy is a safe and effective system of medicine, used by millions worldwide for more than 200 years.
13:09:29 Lisa Samet, N.D. Medicines are prepared from natural sources, and are used in extremely small amounts.  They are recognized by the FDA.
13:09:50 Lisa Samet, N.D. They are non-toxic and safe for children, infants adults and animals.
13:10:25 Lisa Samet, N.D. Homeopathy is based on a principle that like cures like.  That is, if a substance can cause symptoms in a healthy person, they can sure them in a sick person.
13:11:25 Webmama_Tina don't mind me as i post the welcome to newcomers...
13:11:41 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. Please make sure you read and fully understand the Moderated Chat Instructions before participating in this chat. Instructions can be found here: http://www.mommychats.com/modrules.htm  ...A Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. If you have a question, please post a single \?\" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called. "
13:11:46 Lisa Samet, N.D. Homeopathy regards symptoms as the body's healthy attempt to restore itself to balance.
13:12:32 Lisa Samet, N.D. A homeopath will choose a remedy that supports the symptoms, rather than opposing tehm or suppressing them.
13:13:04 Lisa Samet, N.D. Do you want more of an intro, or go to questions?  I have a lot more I can say!
13:13:19 purplepeace ?
13:13:35 SandraMort I'm good...
13:13:51 Webmama_Tina i think we can start questions....
13:14:11 KateDWJMERMJ ?
13:14:12 Webmama_Tina i'm sure you'll get a chance to give more info with the questions asked....go for it sandra!
13:14:17 SandraMort My 70 lb 8 yo daughter has chronic insomnia.  I'm planning to begin giving her tryptophane, a b complex and C but wondered if you had any recommendations for additional (cont'd)
13:14:19 SandraMort things to help her transition to a more normal sleep schedule, maybe coffee cruda or something else?  Also, tips for myself, a 240lb bf adult, also with chronic insomnia, if it's not too much to ask...
13:14:38 wanderlost ?
13:14:48 SandraMort see? efficient!
13:14:51 Webmama_Tina current chatter: SandraMort .... upcoming chatters: purplepeace, KateDWJMERMJ
13:15:31 Webmama_Tina lol sandra
13:15:34 Lisa Samet, N.D. In homeopathy, we treat the person, not the 'disease' so not to be vague, but there isn't a remedy for insomnia, per se.  You need to find out more about the person, the insomnia, etc before choosing an appropriate remedy.
13:15:51 cschwagerl ?
13:16:03 Webmama_Tina current chatter: SandraMort .... upcoming chatters: purplepeace, KateDWJMERMJ, wanderlost, cschwagerl
13:16:14 SandraMort Yeah, I was afraid you'd say that.  I really need to go to a good homeopath, but I haven't had the money
13:16:50 SandraMort Thanks anyway
13:16:54 BabyLilip ?
13:16:55 Lisa Samet, N.D. YOu can try to study homeopathy a bit yourself - there are good books, such as Homeopathy at Home by Panos,m y favorite for home prescribing.
13:17:09 SandraMort heh, in my copious free time.
13:17:12 Webmama_Tina purplepeace is up next
13:17:24 purplepeace Could you talk about miasms and how they affect the way you prescribe remedies?  Do you always use a single \constitutional\" remedy or do you ever work on removing the \"layers\" of miasms?"
13:17:36 Webmama_Tina current chatter: purplepeace .... upcoming chatters: KateDWJMERMJ, wanderlost, cschwager, BabyLilip
13:17:42 sadielake ?
13:18:31 Lisa Samet, N.D. I always use a single dose.  Combination remedies are made by combing the MOST LIKELY remedy for an illness, ie, sinusitis, in the hopes that the one you need will be in there.  As a result, people often get only partial results.
13:19:08 purplepeace Oops, I didn;t mean combination remedies.  I was referring to using nosodes to make a case more clear
13:19:23 purplepeace or to clear genetic issues
13:19:38 sweetpea hi how is everyone doing today i had an question
13:19:40 Lisa Samet, N.D. Miasms are not very relevant for me in prescribing, it is more like an interesting theory.  I take a good case, which get all the patients symptons and then match the remedy that fits closest.  If I'm right, the remedy triggers the body to start healing it
13:19:53 Lisa Samet, N.D. itself- that's important.
13:20:27 sweetpea when u breastfeed people tell me your breast start to sag and u lose weight is that true?
13:20:40 Lisa Samet, N.D. If the case is unclear that might be a good strategy, but most of my cases are clear.  If you take a complete case, it is usually clear!
13:21:07 Lisa Samet, N.D. Is that a homeopathy question?
13:21:26 purplepeace I see.  Is/are there leading homeopaths that you find particularly helpful for casetaking techniques (Sankaran, Seine, Vitolkos, etc)
13:22:04 Webmama_Tina current chatter: purplepeace .... upcoming chatters: KateDWJMERMJ, wanderlost, cschwager, BabyLilip, sadielake
13:22:07 Lisa Samet, N.D. I,ve studied with Dr. Saine since the beginning, about 12 years ago and I appreciate his approach.
13:22:30 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. 13:22:36 Webmama_Tina forgive me...phone call
13:22:37 Lisa Samet, N.D. Should I also mention he's my husband, just to be completely above board :-)
13:22:52 SandraMort That's cool
13:22:53 purplepeace ! ;)
13:23:32 purplepeace I studied with one of his former students - Nadia Bakir.  Sorry to monopolize the ?s.  On to the next...
13:23:55 KateDWJMERMJ I have a 6 month old preemie with complex II enzyme defiancy.  I have started him on coq-10, carnitor, and fish oil, but it will be May before we get into a mito specialist.  Do you have any reccomendations for other things to start in the meantime?
13:25:17 Lisa Samet, N.D. Sorry, that's not really a homeopathy question.  I'm sure there are good supplements for this and it seems like you've found some.  A homeopathic remedy might also be of value, but again, we would need to know a lot more about him to suggest something...
13:25:27 Webmama_Tina current chatter: KateDWJMERMJ .... upcoming chatters: wanderlost, cschwager, BabyLilip, sadielake
13:25:51 wanderlost I think some of my question may have already been answered, but...
13:26:09 KateDWJMERMJ my biggest goal is to get him weaned from the g-tube, because he has no suck or swallow reflex
13:27:01 Lisa Samet, N.D. Can you find a good homeopath?  You can get references via the National Center for Homeopathy  1-877-624-0613
13:27:12 KateDWJMERMJ yeah, i'll do that :)
13:27:17 cschwagerl how do I know when a remedy I am taking is NOT safe for my nursing infant? Examples I'm interested in are Lachesis vs. Capsicum - why is one safe and the other not?
13:27:17 KateDWJMERMJ ty
13:27:25 Lisa Samet, N.D. Really, it could be very valuable.
13:27:31 cthomeopathy or by going to www.homeopathic.org
13:28:19 cschwagerl whoops, sorry wanderlost, I thought you were done...I'll wait until you say your done...
13:28:30 wanderlost ok - !   how does homeopathy come into play with chronic diseases such as cystic fibrosis or diabetes?  can a homeopathic practice go hand in hand with these ailments?  If so, how does one start?
13:28:38 Lisa Samet, N.D. ALL remedies are safe.  Homeopathy is energy medicine, ie, it is not give in crude (or milligram doses).  The dosing is not determined by the age or weight of the baby unlike in conventional medicine.  Its like getting a key in a lock.  If the remedy is
13:28:58 Lisa Samet, N.D. right, it will help, if its not right, likely nothing will happen.
13:29:34 Webmama_Tina i'm SO sorry...got an important phone call in the middle of all this! yikes!
13:29:38 Webmama_Tina normally doesn't happen...
13:29:39 Lisa Samet, N.D. Can you send the last question again - I can't read the top of it
13:29:40 Webmama_Tina catching up....
13:30:03 wanderlost how does homeopathy come into play with chronic diseases such as cystic fibrosis or diabetes? can a homeopathic practice go hand in hand with these ailments? If so, how does one start?
13:30:13 Lisa Samet, N.D. Did I answer sufficiently the question about dosing and nursing
13:30:27 Webmama_Tina current chatter: wanderlost .... upcoming chatters: cschwager, BabyLilip, sadielake
13:30:43 cschwagerl well, my homeopath said not to take the lachesis (my constitutional)...and I really need it!!
13:31:29 Lisa Samet, N.D. Homeopathy is excellent in chronic disease because it actually starts the body to heal itself- the remedies don,t heal you, they only act as a trigger for the body to heal.  EHomeopathy excels in treating people with chronic disease compared to convention
13:31:41 Lisa Samet, N.D. which often just palliates the symptoms!
13:32:04 wanderlost what is eHOMEOPATHY?
13:32:20 Lisa Samet, N.D. a typo!!! :-)
13:32:29 wanderlost oh :)
13:32:31 cschwagerl why wouldn't it be safe for me to take lachesis to keep my body operating well especially while nursing?
13:32:44 rct i have the same question as wanderlost, specific to type 1 diagnosis in my 8 yr old whole foods living dd.
13:33:01 Lisa Samet, N.D. Why nisn't your body already operatin well and why Lachesis of all the remedies to help it?
13:33:18 cschwagerl constitutional match. It really works.
13:33:31 wanderlost so where would one start - I don't know of any homeopaths in my area?  You mentioned a book earleier
13:33:43 Lisa Samet, N.D. Great, then it is good for you, keep taking it as you need it.
13:33:46 cschwagerl I have chronic fatigue and lots of numbness in my arms/hands.
13:33:47 erinbaba Hi, I'm wondering what you recommend for Chronic Lyme in either children or their parents?  Long term antibiotics seem to be the only traditional solution?
13:34:11 Webmama_Tina Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. If you have a question, please post a single \?\" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called. THANKYOU! :) "
13:34:22 kirktrac ?
13:34:25 rct ? (thanks)
13:34:37 Lisa Samet, N.D. The NHC can help you with a referral in your area - 1-877-624-0613.  The book - Homeopathy at Home by Panos is more for acute prescribing, ear infections, first aid, etc

13:35:09 cthomeopathy NCH website is www.homeopathic.org
13:35:17 Lisa Samet, N.D. Homeopathy CAN help in Type 1 Diabetes, along with diet and herbs.
13:35:19 SandraMort Tina, pm.
13:35:31 erinbaba
13:35:36 wanderlost are there any other books with regards to chronic ailments?
13:35:47 Webmama_Tina current chatter: wanderlost .... upcoming chatters: cschwager, BabyLilip, sadielake, kirktrac, rct, erinbaba
13:36:21 SandraMort ?
13:36:29 Lisa Samet, N.D. Not ones that are simple and reliable.  To get to know remedies better, Nash Leaders provides a good picture, but for chronic prescribing, best to find a homeopath.
13:36:39 wanderlost thank you!
13:36:56 Webmama_Tina current chatter: wanderlost .... upcoming chatters: cschwager, BabyLilip, sadielake, kirktrac, rct, erinbaba, SandraMort
13:37:29 Lisa Samet, N.D. I'm not a big fan of long term any pharmaceutical drugs, much less anti-biotics.  Try to find a natural approach which helps the body heal!
13:38:04 wanderlost is that possible with a disease like cystic fibrosis?
13:38:37 Lisa Samet, N.D. Absolutely!  I know of at least 2 patients doing extremely well with CF on homeopathy.
13:39:27 taina22 ?
13:39:29 wanderlost wonderful!  Later, I would love to know more - but I best let the others ask thier ?? - thanks again!
13:40:01 Webmama_Tina did cschwagerl's question get answered?
13:40:06 Webmama_Tina trying to adjust the queue
13:40:32 musician_mother hi dr. samet. the only vaccine my son's dr. suggested is hib.  he's gotten the first 2 (starting at 6 months) but i'm having second-thoughts about anymore.
13:40:40 Webmama_Tina Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. If you have a question, please post a single \?\" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called. THANKYOU! :) "

13:41:19 musician_mother so sorry

13:41:31 Webmama_Tina (unless cschwager's question was answered?)
13:41:41 Webmama_Tina current chatter: cschwager .... upcoming chatters: BabyLilip, sadielake, kirktrac, rct, erinbaba, SandraMort, musician_mother
13:41:53 Webmama_Tina no worries, just trying to ensure that we don't bombard our wonderful speaker! :)
13:42:02 Lisa Samet, N.D. Think twice about vaccinating.  There have been many great articles in Mothering about this which I often reference with my patients..  Since we are talking about homeopathy, I can say it is possible to do vaccinations using homeopathic nosodes for the
13:42:20 Lisa Samet, N.D. particular diseases you are most concerned about.  Look into it.
13:43:26 musician_mother thank you
13:44:21 Joyce ?
13:45:01 Lisa Samet, N.D. and?...
13:45:07 Webmama_Tina ok BabyLilip, you're up!
13:45:18 BabyLilip  Thanks, Hi, I have a 2 year old son who has a contact reaction allergy to dairy. When his skin comes in contact with anything with dairy in it, it'll break out into hives. Do you think that any homeopathic remedies can be helpful for my son?
13:45:20 Webmama_Tina current chatter: BabyLilip .... upcoming chatters: sadielake, kirktrac, rct, erinbaba, SandraMort, taina22, Joyce
13:45:40 BabyLilip Also if you have seen/heard about a situation like my son's, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks.
13:46:20 Lisa Samet, N.D. Yes, but the most obvious thing is to avoid dairy.  A reaction like that is an over-reactivity of the immune system - inappropriately so.  Homeopathy works on the level of the immune system, so it would help to balance it over time and be less reactive.
13:47:02 BabyLilip Do you think it will go away completely?
13:47:18 Lisa Samet, N.D. Over time, yes.
13:47:33 BabyLilip thank you very much. :)
13:47:42 Lisa Samet, N.D. Welcome!
13:47:45 sadielake I'd love to hear a bit about constitutional remedies versus single remedies for different symptoms. What kinds of symptoms can a constitutional remedy heal/cure that you can't get from symptom based remedies? (contd)
13:48:44 sadielake in specific, my 9mo daughter... is it possible to get a constitiutional rem. for her when she's pre-language? Would that somehow be better than individual symptom prescribing?
13:49:00 Webmama_Tina  current chatter: sadielake .... upcoming chatters: kirktrac, rct, erinbaba, SandraMort, taina22, Joyce
13:49:03 Lisa Samet, N.D. I don,t see things like that exactly.  A classical homeopath doesn't give single remedies for single symptoms, ie, one remedy for a headache, on for the eczema, one for the joint pain, ALL IN THE SAME PERSON\  We would give one remedy, which covers the"
13:49:55 Lisa Samet, N.D. whole case.  As the body heals, these symptoms go away.  The other approach is very much like conventional medicine, but using remedies.
13:50:42 Lisa Samet, N.D. and?
13:50:50 sadielake so what's the benefit of constitutional vs. just syptom remedies>
13:51:32 Lisa Samet, N.D. Symptoms remedies give you partial cure.  Its much more satisfying to trest the whole person and have the person's totalhealth improve.
13:51:32 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. 13:51:56 sadielake do I need to wait until she's verbal so she can be \interviewed\"?"
13:52:53 Lisa Samet, N.D. No, as a mother  you know tons about her.  The homeopathy should know what 'normal'.  So, beteen the two fo you, you can find symptoms that lead to a good prescription.  The things a homeopath might find interesting or peculiar are not necessarily things
13:52:59 SandraMort Was trest \treat\" or \"test\""
13:53:26 Lisa Samet, N.D. a conventional doc would find interesting, ie, sweating on the head in sleep, late teething, ingrown toenails, etc
13:53:39 Webmama_Tina At this time, the queue is full. Questions already in line will be asked, but we cannot take anymore today. Sorry for the inconvenience.
13:53:45 Lisa Samet, N.D. treat, sorry, I'm typing fast!
13:53:51 Webmama_Tina :)
13:53:55 Webmama_Tina you're doing great lisa!
13:54:00 sadielake ok thanks so much! that makes it all seem easier
13:54:02 Lisa Samet, N.D. thanks :-)

13:54:17 Webmama_Tina ok sandra
13:54:18 kirktrac My 7mth old has cradlecap & recently got eczema on his arms.  I've used sulphur - which helps, but the book I have said to dose only for 3 days. If its working can I continue or do I need to give it a rest. Also, are there other remedies I should look at?
13:54:35 Webmama_Tina current chatter:kirktrac .... upcoming chatters: rct, erinbaba, taina22, Joyce
13:55:08 Lisa Samet, N.D. You give the remedy when its needed.  So, for example, if you give the sulphur you may notice an improvement if its the right remedy.  As long as things are getting better, you wait.  Very important.
13:55:23 Lisa Samet, N.D. When the eczema starts to become less agood again, you repeat.
13:55:52 kirktrac Ok. Thank you for clearing that up. Also, thanks to the previous mom for her question and your answer.
13:56:03 Lisa Samet, N.D. The body will tell you when it needs the next dose by showing you some of the symptoms again.  Never go by a formula in homoepathy, remember, we also treat the individual and everyone is different.
13:56:19 kirktrac Very helpful! Thank you!
13:56:56 Webmama_Tina current chatter:rct .... upcoming chatters: erinbaba, taina22, Joyce
13:56:59 rct how to assist my 8yr old's dealing with the exo insulin she's currently on (4/06 diag. type 1 diabetes), with the long-term goal of re-balance w/o it, or little..  diet and exercise we've covered...  this is an intense dis-ease and hard to keep the faith
13:57:23 ambiesmom any advice for eczema on eyelids?
13:57:34 Lisa Samet, N.D. Yes, I,m sure.  Try homoepathy.  It should defintiely be an asset in your current regime.
13:58:12 Lisa Samet, N.D. Sorry not to be more specific, but if a homeopath can find a good remedy for her, she will do better, I'm sure of it.
13:58:24 rct do you think the body can heal, including tissue regen?  it's an immune system attack, etc...
13:58:36 ambiesmom Does it take some time to find that remedy?
13:58:49 Lisa Samet, N.D. Absolutely.  Homeopathy works at the level of the immune system - how perfect!
13:58:50 Webmama_Tina Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. Unfortunately our queue is currently full...we are nearly out of time
13:59:28 rct thank you.  i appreciate your time and outlook.
13:59:40 Webmama_Tina current chatter: erinbaba.... upcoming chatters: , taina22, Joyce
13:59:42 erinbaba 2 questions:  1.  So with chronic lyme - can homeopathy support the body while someone is on long-term antibiotics?  there are so many studies support antibiotics in seeking and terminating the slow growing bacteria and few studies on homeopathy doing so?
13:59:44 Lisa Samet, N.D. Hopefully not.  If a complete case is take and the homeopath has good trainging and experience they can find the remedy immediately. But in any case, be somewhat patient.  I think 6 months ois ideal to keep trying.
14:00:52 Lisa Samet, N.D. Unfortunately there are not many good studies in homoepathy, due to underfunding.  However, you can use homeopathy while on allopathic medicatins, so that aspect is not a problem.  I hope your supplementing with probiotcs with all the anti-biotics!
14:01:12 ambiesmom Thanks...she has been on antibiotics and misdiagnosed for a year..so I was assuming it would take that long to reverse....6 months sounds better :)
14:01:50 ambiesmom Yes she is on preprobiotics and other homeopathics for her GI
14:02:14 Lisa Samet, N.D. I meant 6 months to see if the homeopath can find a good remedy.  Once its found, I don,t know how I don't know how long it will take for her full recovery, it depends on many factors...
14:02:28 erinbaba Yes, probiotics are effective and I take them.  Thank you for your response, What do you recommend for a child who has an allergic reaction to sunscreen?  I have tried the most sensitive sunscreens - paba free, etc, and I haven't found one that works??
14:03:07 Lisa Samet, N.D. Good question, though not homeopathy.  I'm not really sure I have  a good answer for you, sorry. :-(
14:03:09 Webmama_Tina Friendly Reminder: Please remember this is a moderated chat, mamas...we have an order to doing things so that it doesn't get confusing. we are basically out of time at this point and I'd like to try to get the last people's questions answered if we can...since they've been waiting patiently a long time.
14:03:29 Lisa Samet, N.D. sorry Tina!
14:03:32 MaureeninMarin can you recommend any books or on-line courses ?
14:03:36 Webmama_Tina current chatter: erinbaba.... upcoming chatters: taina22, Joyce
14:04:06 Webmama_Tina no worries lisa...i know there are people new to this format that don't understand how things work yet. :)  just takes a little experience. :)
14:04:14 Lisa Samet, N.D. Homeopathy at Home by Panos is my favorite for acute prescribing.  On-line courses ???
14:04:44 Webmama_Tina the only ones talking right now should be me, lisa and the current chatter...who i believe is erinbaba still....otherwise it gets very confusing with a large crowd like this
14:05:23 Webmama_Tina we are now 5min overtime...lisa are you ok to answer the last 2 questions in the queue or do you need to go?
14:05:27 erinbaba Thank you for your response, Quickly, What do you recommend for a child who has an allergic reaction to sunscreen? I have tried the most sensitive sunscreens - paba free, etc, and I haven't found one that works??
14:05:34 Lisa Samet, N.D. I have 10 minutes, should be ok
14:05:40 Webmama_Tina ok
14:05:59 Webmama_Tina then lets move on to the next question...taina22 has been waiting patiently
14:06:00 Webmama_Tina :)
14:06:02 taina22 2 questions as well...
14:06:07 taina22 thank you
14:06:10 taina22 I am nursing my 5 month old son and he has eczema on his legs.  I went to our homeopath who suggested calendula cream by Boiron but it has not helped.  Anything else you recommend or I should be doing?
14:07:02 Webmama_Tina current chatter:taina22 .... and our last question will be from Joyce :)
14:07:14 Lisa Samet, N.D. I would not use any cream to try to get rid of a skin eruption.  I would repeat this 100x if I could type that fast.  When you suppress an eruption, even with something 'natural' , but drive the disease back inside the body, making the overal person less
14:07:42 erinbaba I'm sorry but I never had my question re sunscreen answered
14:08:12 Lisa Samet, N.D. healthy.  Hence the triad, allergies, eczema and asthma. I believe many suppressed skin eruptions end up coming out again in asthma.  So, what can you do?  As far as I'm concerned homeopathy is the OMNLY answer.  Sorry to sound dogmatice.  Homeopathy can
14:08:26 Lisa Samet, N.D. heal the skin from the inside.
14:08:48 taina22 so you're suggesting remedies and such?
14:09:09 taina22 our doctor did not say anything about this and he's been around forever
14:09:22 Lisa Samet, N.D. yes, remedies.  One remedy prescribed which covers the whole child.
14:09:54 taina22 thank you....2nd q', what is good for a 1 year old to take for bronchitis?
14:10:01 taina22 or do?
14:10:08 Lisa Samet, N.D. Well, I'm sure he's great, but I doubt he knows much about homeopathy.  I've rarely heard of an allopath recommedning homeopathy, unfortunately, because it has so much to offer.  Do some reading up on it!
14:10:27 ambiesmom I heard cod liver oil is good for that..i could be wrong though
14:11:22 Lisa Samet, N.D. As we said earlier, homeopaths don't prescribe for the disease, but for the person.  Sorry not to be more helpful  Your one year old needs to take  a remedy, not his bronchitis.  Does that make sense?
14:11:47 taina22 yes, it is not for me, for my girlfriend sitting next to me...will pass on the information
14:11:51 taina22 thank you again
14:11:54 taina22 ;-)
