13:05:36 Webmama_Tina ok dr, did you want to add anything?
13:06:06 RandallNeustaedter No that's great.
13:06:14 Webmama_Tina mamas, you can start posting single question marks to start the queue

13:06:27 skrhythm ?
13:06:43 dancerimma Hi, Thanks.  I jus wanted some tips for avoiding flu this season..
13:07:08 dancerimma My dh works in a nursing home, and has to work the flu quarantine floor
13:07:12 Webmama_Tina current chatter: dancerimma ....upcoming chatters: Gwendolyn, skrhythm
13:07:48 dancerimma ds is only 20 mos, and I am 3 mos pg, and we don't get the shot.  Any ideas?
13:07:53 Webmama_Tina agh, as always i forgot to turn off the entrance/exits...sorry dr
13:07:55 Webmama_Tina i'll do that right now
13:08:02 RandallNeustaedter A bit off topic, so I would check out the previous transcripts of chats which dealt with this topic in excruciating detail. Also my bood FLU: Alternative Treatments and Prevention.
13:08:48 Webmama_Tina ok anyone that wants to make the entrances and exits go away, click refresh and log back in
13:09:13 Webmama_Tina dancer, past transcripts:
13:09:29 Webmama_Tina http://mommychats.com/mothering/index.htm
13:09:32 RandallNeustaedter I would not be afraid of viruses. It's only the flu anyway. I would give him colostrum, vit AandD, and a fish oil supplement at least.
13:09:40 Webmama_Tina and i'll see if i can find the link to one that specifically has flu info
13:10:10 dancerimma Thanks - I'll check the transcripts, and try those!
13:10:46 Gwendolyn My 17month is lactose intolerant. Discovered after 5 weeks of a loose acid poo and a terrible rash. We hae since changed to lactose free milk, but are so limited for him.  Do I need a probiotic for him , if so, which type? What other dairy can I give him?
13:11:19 RandallNeustaedter Why are you giving her milk?
13:11:58 Webmama_Tina current chatter:Gwendolyn....upcoming chatters: skrhythm
13:12:04 Gwendolyn Because the ped reccommends it and he loves it--its a he--I thought after 18 months it was okay
13:12:20 Gwendolyn For nutrition, I guess?
13:12:27 RandallNeustaedter Gwendolyn I don't recommend milk for babies until they are at least 24 months. So just stop it.
13:12:44 RandallNeustaedter Babies do not need milk from cows. They are humans.
13:12:59 Gwendolyn What about his excessive thirst for it?  and yogurt?
13:13:24 Gwendolyn What else should I give him?
13:13:32 bennersmom ?
13:13:41 RandallNeustaedter Babies at this age need veges, fruits, grains, eggs, beans, and other animal proteins. Not dairy products, especially if they are sensitive to it.
13:13:49 mum2Sarah ?
13:13:49 Webmama_Tina current chatter:Gwendolyn....upcoming chatters: skrhythm, bennersmom
13:13:50 RandallNeustaedter He should drink water.
13:14:13 RandallNeustaedter And sure a mixed probiotic would probably be helpful to resettle the digestive function.
13:14:21 Gwendolyn I was worried he would miss out on nutrients---what about rice or almond milk?
13:14:51 Gwendolyn Can you suggest a probiotic?
13:14:54 RandallNeustaedter Rice milk is mostly just carbohydrate. Not very nutritionally useful.
13:15:04 RandallNeustaedter I use Metagenics.
13:15:07 RandallNeustaedter next
13:15:10 skrhythm i've heard that probiotics are working well to take care of colicy babies?  i have acidophilus in my fridge is this what they are refering to?  and if so how do i give it to my son who is 4 months?
13:15:14 Gwendolyn thx
13:15:21 Webmama_Tina current chatter:skrhythm....upcoming chatters: bennersmom, mum2Sarah
13:16:49 RandallNeustaedter skrhythm If your baby is solely breastfeeding, then you should use a pure strain of bifidobacterium lactis.
13:17:05 RandallNeustaedter Again Metagenics is a good brand, but others are acceptable too.
13:17:27 sadieLake ?
13:17:31 RandallNeustaedter But probiotics alone will not adequately treat a colicky baby.
13:17:31 skrhythm purly breast fed what is bifidobact..........?
13:17:45 Webmama_Tina current chatter:skrhythm....upcoming chatters: bennersmom, mum2Sarah, sadieLake
13:18:17 RandallNeustaedter There are excellent treatments for colic and reflux symptoms, including acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and homeopathy.
13:18:48 skrhythm do you know off the top of your head what homeopathy?
13:19:10 hayday ?
13:19:14 RandallNeustaedter The homeopathic medicine depends on the symptoms and the individual picture in the baby.
13:19:27 skrhythm yes, ok thank you
13:19:36 RandallNeustaedter That said, Colocynth is the most commonly indicated remedy for colic.
13:19:38 RandallNeustaedter next
13:19:44 bennersmom I have a 5 month old who has had only breastmilk to this point.  We're planning to introduce solids after 6 months and have heard confliciting advice on what to introduce first.  Can you advise if rice cereal is really the best first thing to introduce?
13:19:48 Webmama_Tina current chatter: bennersmom....upcoming chatters: mum2Sarah, sadieLake, hayday
13:20:12 RandallNeustaedter Do not give rice cereal or any grains until 12 months.
13:20:25 bennersmom what would you recommend for solids?
13:20:33 RandallNeustaedter Begin with pureed veges, fruits, and egg yolk.
13:20:54 bennersmom Thank you.
13:21:05 RandallNeustaedter Babies can begin with tastes of food off your finger, then gradually increase the quantity they decide to swallow.
13:21:34 RandallNeustaedter This topic of introducing solids is discussed at length in my book, Child Health Guide.
13:21:35 RandallNeustaedter next
13:21:39 Webmama_Tina current chatter: mum2Sarah....upcoming chatters: sadieLake, hayday
13:21:40 mum2Sarah My 6-month-old daughter just started solids a few days ago. She has come down with her first cold this morning. My intuition tells me to go back to exclusive breast-feeding while she is under the weather. What do you advise?
13:21:45 KateDWJMERMJ ?
13:22:07 RandallNeustaedter Yes, give her system of break at this point. She does not need solids.
13:22:14 Webmama_Tina current chatter: mum2Sarah....upcoming chatters: sadieLake, hayday, KateDWJMERMJ
13:22:18 mum2Sarah Thank you!
13:22:25 RandallNeustaedter Babies will do fine with just breastmilk for 9 months.
13:22:26 RandallNeustaedter next
13:22:26 sadieLake my 81/2 mo daughter still gags on food so I haven't actually given her entire meals
13:22:53 Webmama_Tina current chatter: sadieLake....upcoming chatters: hayday, KateDWJMERMJ
13:23:05 sadieLake my question is, is there anything she's not getting from me that I NEED to be supplementing with food?
13:23:20 sadieLake She always seems to ge full from breast milk
13:23:25 RandallNeustaedter sadieLake Don't worry about it. Learning to swallow solid foods is a skill that babies learn gradually, and some faster than others.
13:23:54 sadieLake so should I continue to offer \meals\" or just bitefulls once in a while until she stops gagging?"
13:24:15 RandallNeustaedter Just make sure your baby is getting omega-3 fats and A and D. A half teaspoon of cod liver oil will do that, given to her through a dropper.
13:24:30 skrhythm ?
13:24:36 sadieLake even if I'm taking enough every day?
13:25:00 RandallNeustaedter I am not a big fan of meals for babies. Just like with breastfeeding, kids eat every 2-3 hours.
13:25:15 Webmama_Tina current chatter: sadieLake....upcoming chatters: hayday, KateDWJMERMJ, skrhythm
13:25:34 bennersmom ?
13:25:34 RandallNeustaedter If you are taking adequate levels of fish oil and she is getting some sun, then that probably covers it.
13:25:45 sadieLake thank you
13:26:11 Webmama_Tina current chatter: hayday....upcoming chatters: KateDWJMERMJ, skrhythm, bennersmom
13:26:14 hayday what is the daily recommended amount of calcium for a 6-year old and if a child is deficient, would there be any signs to look for?
13:26:22 RandallNeustaedter Usually pediatricians check babies for anemia at 9 months, which is a good idea.
13:26:24 RandallNeustaedter next
13:26:37 Webmama_Tina hayday was next dr :)
13:27:22 Webmama_Tina [hayday] what is the daily recommended amount of calcium for a 6-year old and if a child is deficient, would there be any signs to look for?
13:27:35 RandallNeustaedter Recommended amount of calcium is 500 mg.
