21:15:23 |
sarahjbuckley |
Hi teagreeribbons, nice to see you here,
I think that mainstream medicine,
especially OB?GYN doesn't understand
what the alternatives are about, partyly
becauise they can't see that there are
some major problems with their
perspective |
|
21:15:46 |
teagreenribbons |
K, nice to see you as well |
|
21:15:57 |
teagreenribbons |
Same here |
|
21:16:00 |
christymomof2 |
They are so wrapped up in what they
learn in Med school, that the
alternatives" are seen as not as
effective/safe, etc" |
|
21:16:25 |
sarahjbuckley |
You know, most OBs have never seen
anormal birth, don't even know what it
looks like, so have a hard time, I
think, believing taht it exists! |
|
21:16:40 |
teagreenribbons |
Why can't they do both of them |
|
21:16:46 |
christymomof2 |
example, homebirthing...of which I just
experienced 4 weeks ago! :) |
|
21:17:10 |
sarahjbuckley |
I think that thuings are changing, Drs
are becoming more open minded generally,
but somehow its more fixed in OB |
|
21:17:13 |
Webmama_Tina |
christymomof2 i just PMd ya :) |
|
21:18:05 |
teagreenribbons |
K, why can't do both in the OB as well
because its really ashame on what they
do to women/women trust them/and so on |
|
21:18:09 |
TurboClaudia |
? |
|
21:18:12 |
sarahjbuckley |
Well, I think Drs can have a mindset
that is very trusting of teh technology,
it's hard to get out of that unless they
experience it themselves |
|

K |
|

I haven't seen taht Claudia, although i

21:20:33 |
sarahjbuckley |
And sk2sk is absolutely the norm after
birth, it benefits mother and baby |
|
21:21:03 |
sarahjbuckley |
the mother keeps the baby warm, the
contact helps her to release oxytocin
and prevent bleeding |
|
21:21:36 |

bbaies sk2sk are actualy warmer tahn in

|
21:22:13 |

|
21:22:31 |

They did this research where they let
babies stay sk2sk and found that the
babies were calmer for hours afterwards
(when thye were taken to the nursery,
unfortunately!) |

The mother had an epidural and was able
to reach down and be the first to touch
her baby, abnd she pulled teh baby out.
It took alot of work to set up, but such
a great example for all of us |

problem'- my milk was letting down too
quickly for my newborn, I found that
posture feding (having her uphill to my
braests) helped alot, she grew out of it
at 6 weeks |

Yes, and it ceratinly worth looking at
your diet, especially dairy, soy, wheat, |
|
21:28:21 |
christymomof2 |
and how do you posture feed? |
|
21:29:09 |
sarahjbuckley |
Ok, I found that feeding her sitting
yup- her body was vertical as was I ,
was really helpful, some find that
expresing the first really fast milk
helps too, others have actually lay down
with the baby on top and fed them
against gravity |
|
21:29:50 |
sarahjbuckley |
What you are doing is slowing the milk
flow by making it against gravity, ie
flow horizintally or up, not dwon, if
that makes sense |
|
21:30:03 |
christymomof2 |
ohhhh, okay. Yes, that makes sense |
|
21:30:18 |
christymomof2 |
She doesn't gulp air as my breast
empties...so that makes sense |

Thank you! I will try that |

21:30:48 |

didn't have this problem with nigh
feeds, I think it may have been more
relaxed. |
|
21:30:51 |
Kathy |
do you think the air is causing the spit
up? |
|
21:30:57 |

also carrying upright may help |

21:30:58 |
christymomof2 |
She does that too Sarah!!! |

Kathy, yes I think it might
contribute...she doesn't spit up at
night |

I have yet to start menses after my

help regain fertility? |
|
21:38:03 |
sarahjbuckley |
Are you breastfeeding? |
|
21:38:09 |
MrsRoss |
Yes. |
|
21:39:15 |
sarahjbuckley |
Well, everyone is different re return of
fertility, some women can ntake 18
montsh or so when breastfeeding, but I
woudl encourage you to let your littel
one continue, it;s such a good
investment in their health and wellbeing
long-term |
|
21:40:05 |
MrsRoss |
yes, I have no intention of weaning.
Thanks! |
|
21:40:24 |
sarahjbuckley |
I have a couple of answers that I've
written for mothering experts about
enhancing fertility, abut again, please
also consider the neds of your little
one, teh WHo recommends at least 3 years
spacing for optimal health for all teh
family |
|
21:41:42 |
sarahjbuckley |
Personally, I have also noticed that the
nursing child has some control over the
mother's fertility, if they feed more,
she is les fertile, and I think it's
good, to let them have asay in teh
decision about the next baby, it's such
a huge adjustment for teh oldest,
especuialy |
|
21:42:49 |
sarahjbuckley |
Also, are you ready for another baby? It
may involve some emotional work for you,
next pregnancy, if your last birth was
difficult, it's good to have someone, a
midwife ideally, to help work through
this |
|
21:43:34 |
sarahjbuckley |
I have to admit my bias here, I fould
the shorter spacings in my family of
orign, and with my one children, mush
harder tahn the longer spacings! |
|
21:43:49 |
sarahjbuckley |
Sorry about the typos :) |
|
21:44:09 |
MrsRoss |
yes, I wonder if we're ready yet or
not. I suppose not. It is helpful to
think of it terms of 'natural spacing'
rather than having complete control over
things. Thanks so much! |

A friend of mine recently had her 2nd

entering the hospital, was 4 cm. SHe was
told to get the epidural to help slow
down labor... |
|
21:46:23 |
mayas_mommy |
in order for the anitbiotics to take
effect (4 hrs?). Do you think this is
advisable? |
|
21:47:40 |
sarahjbuckley |
No, I don't agree with automatic
antibiotics for strep B, teh risks for a
healthy full-term baby are very low, and
need to be balanced against the risks of
exposing so many babies to antibiotics.
It seems crazy to slow labour! |

21:49:44 |
sarahjbuckley |
I have been strep B in obe pregnnacy and
didn't take anything, I really think it
is another intervention taht we don't
appreciate the risks of |
|
21:50:39 |
sarahjbuckley |
yes, that is true, but the risks of
getting infected are less than 1 in 500 |
|
21:52:12 |
sarahjbuckley |
It's all about informed choice for me,
rather than using emotive language to
persuade women. Antibiotics can
interfere with teh mothers gut flora,
which can affect the baby long-term |
|
21:52:49 |
mayas_mommy |
I wasn't aware that there were major
drawbacks to getting antibiotics. Thanks
for the info! |
|
21:53:03 |

And we really don't have the evidence
about the side-effects for mother and
baby and whether this is safe,

antibiotics in labour is a major

|
21:59:22 |
kristen |
ok, have there been studies that show
that skin-to-skin time is reduced when
mothers have an epidural or other drugs
during labor? |
|
21:59:24 |
Webmama_Tina |
no worries, it will take me a bit to get
dd to get changed anyway |
|
21:59:25 |
Webmama_Tina |
lol |
|
21:59:32 |
kristen |
perhaps because baby is more at risk of
being taken away right away? |
|
22:00:29 |
sarahjbuckley |
Thanks Kirsten, no direct reseach as far
as I know, but an epidural makes
forceps, vacuum, cesareans more liklely,
the mother more likely to need stitches
etc, so sk to sk is less likely |
|
22:00:56 |
sarahjbuckley |
Yes, the baby alos has risks of fever,
fetal distress, and being taken awau
after a cesarean |
|
22:01:24 |
kristen |
and I've been told that epi drugs don't
pass to the baby, but they acutually do,
right? |
|
22:01:39 |
sarahjbuckley |
I think we are startying to understand
how crucial continued attachmnet btw
mother and baby is...there as a graet
summary recently |
|
22:02:20 |
sarahjbuckley |
i'll see if i can find the article |
|
22:02:34 |
kristen |
I'd like to read that |
|
22:03:21 |
sarahjbuckley |
Ok, it;s Jan Winberg, Swedish
researcher, published Nov 2005, he just
died, search pubmed or email me |
|
22:03:48 |
sarahjbuckley |

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi
and put winberg j and it will come up |
|
22:04:57 |
kristen |
I'll do that :) |
|
22:05:13 |
sarahjbuckley |
yes, epi drugs go into teh mother;s
bloodstream to teh baby, withion a few
minutes |
|
22:05:38 |
sarahjbuckley |
My article has more about how they can
affect the baby in teh womb and after
birth... |
|
22:06:18 |
