13:14:32 Sarojni i think the most overwhelming feeling is looking at our homes and wanting EVERYTHING organized, peaceful and perfect RIGHT NOW.  big mistake.  take one room, one area or one space and clean it.  then do one thing to make it  look peaceful such as placing a candle in it or a small vase with one flower.  noise reduction is also a must.  cannot have quiet with loud music (ok, sometimes).  encourage kids to engage in calming activities.  our world is very fast paced
13:14:59 TurboClaudia ?
13:15:26 Webmama_Tina upcoming chatters:  TurboClaudia
13:15:54 Webmama_Tina Sarojni when you're ready for a new question just let me know
13:16:05 Sarojni ready
13:16:09 TurboClaudia i hate hate hate cleaning/ straightening/ organizing by myself, but my partner has completely different ideas about how he thinks things should be and we get into arguments.
13:16:25 Webmama_Tina ok claudia
13:16:29 Webmama_Tina woops beat me, lol
13:16:30 TurboClaudia any suggestions or thoughts?
13:16:54 Webmama_Tina oh and thankyou sarojni for your answer to my question
13:17:04 Webmama_Tina :)
13:18:58 Sarojni control can be a struggle for couples.  i say find the areas of commonality, then let the one who has strengths in that area decide.  i'm almost 50 (in march) and i've learned that these issues are really small compared to the big stuff in life like good health, close relationships etc.  if your partner likes to clean i say let him do it!
13:19:20 angelsonearthlivehere I'm back

13:21:40 Sarojni a note for turboclaudia:  if you feel really strongly about an issue, then i believe both partners need to compromise
13:22:17 Webmama_Tina sarojni, while the mamas are thinking of questions, can you continue to give us some tips and ideas for creating a soothing home environment? i, for one, can use all the help i can get! :)
13:22:37 Webmama_Tina specific examples would be great!
13:23:47 Webmama_Tina i also would love to know what you think about color choices...as far as if there are some colors (like for painting the walls, colors of drapes, furniture, room accents, etc) that are more peaceful/soothing

13:28:01 Sarojni if i may share with everyone how this became a paramount goal in my life.  my daughter (adopted from india) is temperamental"--or spirited--and a doctor i've been seeing has suggested many helpful techniques to use for calming the environment, which helps the nervous system.  turning down lights signals the body to slow down. creating rhythms and structure with quiet times, allows the body to be renewed.  these have been the inspiration for my article.  plus, i find the outside world quite stimulating and like to know my house is a refuge."
13:28:33 Webmama_Tina my computer just slowed waaaaaaaaay down, bear with me...if i disappear i'll be right back...
13:31:12 aceboo ?
13:31:42 Webmama_Tina sarojni, let me know when you're ready for  aceboo's question
13:31:44 Webmama_Tina :)
13:32:19 Sarojni about colors...i tend to like shades of  sage green combined with plum.  i stay away from hot"  stimulating colors like red unless it's to honor or recognize a holiday (xmas, valentine's day)."
13:32:31 Sarojni ready
13:32:49 aceboo my children's room always makes ME feel stressed! what are some tips for kids' rooms?  and mine as well, lol -you decorate for holidays? how so?
13:33:22 Webmama_Tina good questions!
13:33:41 Webmama_Tina oh and i too like sage and plum!
13:34:16 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. Please make sure you read and fully understand the Moderated Chat Instructions before participating in this chat. Instructions can be found here: http://www.mommychats.com/modrules.htm ...A Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. If you have a question, please post a single ?" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called."
13:34:39 Sarojni i'd like to know what you actually see upon entering your kids' room.  is it filled with toys?  are the colors too agitating?  do you have a place for most things so your kids know where THEY can put them?  let's chat more about this
13:36:29 Webmama_Tina aceboo?
13:36:30 aceboo ok, it is filled with toys and is small+, there are bins for the toys but they r not enclosed, no colors really
13:36:40 Webmama_Tina woops nevermind, lol
13:37:43 aceboo perhaps i should do SOMe thing to decorate?
13:38:34 aceboo paint a wall? fussy nurslinig, brb
13:39:27 Webmama_Tina since we're on the topic of children's rooms...and aceboo mentioned painting a wall...what do you think of painting a forest scene on a wall or walls? or do you think that's too busy?
13:40:49 Sarojni i'd sit with your kids and do a little culling.  have them each choose 2-5 items to give away.  my daughter has never minded this activity and there is a spirit of  good deed" in it doing so.  i also have her give something away if something new comes in.  bedrooms can overstimulating especially w/ tv's, dvd's, cd players etc.  i don't have any of these things in  my daughter's room.  yes, i think a forest scene would be great!"
13:44:13 Webmama_Tina do you have any suggestions for organizing of the remaining toys? any websites you can refer us to that have great organizational systems for purchase?
13:44:27 aceboo inexpensively
13:44:32 Webmama_Tina yes that too!
13:44:33 Webmama_Tina lol
13:45:13 Webmama_Tina i prefer wood, because it just is so much more soothing, but having to go the plastic route lately because of cost issues.... argh
13:45:50 Webmama_Tina but hey, whatever gets things organized! :)
13:46:39 Sarojni when my daughter was young, we kept her toys in a plastic bin.  each day before dinner  my husband and i would  have her put her toys back in.  i don't think organizing needs to be fancy or complicated.  it could even be a cardboard box that your kids decorate
13:48:16 Webmama_Tina mamas, any more questions for sarojni?
13:48:30 Sarojni ready
13:48:34 Webmama_Tina i'll throw one in there again...what about window treatments? and room accents?
13:48:38 Webmama_Tina any recommendations?
13:49:01 Webmama_Tina i currently have venitian blinds...not particularly soothing
13:49:36 Webmama_Tina but we do live in an area that gets HOT in the summer and so was thinking to soften things with some drapes? (if i can be sure they won't be pulled down by cats or little ones)
13:49:51 Webmama_Tina i mean add drapes to the blinds
13:49:53 TurboClaudia tina, are those blinds cordless?  'cause that's  a hazard for little ones...
13:50:08 Webmama_Tina no they're not, but i got those cord wrapper things
13:50:29 Webmama_Tina gets them up out of reach :)
13:51:03 Sarojni i like treatments that allow light control, especially on hot, bright afternoons.  drapes are a bit heavy, but there are many curtains that work nicely or blinds that have opaque filters in them.  if you have venetian blinds, how about placing a nice rod over them and a curtain on the rod.  it will soften the look.
13:51:22 Webmama_Tina good idea
13:51:39 Webmama_Tina so just a valance you mean?
13:51:42 Webmama_Tina on top?
13:53:32 Sarojni a valance is ok, but an actual curtain to cover the entire window would look less severe or broken in half.  this will give a feeling of continuity to the eyes
13:53:42 Webmama_Tina ah ok
13:54:11 Webmama_Tina what other sorts of things do you recommend for softening up the feel of a room?
13:57:54 Spirit Hello
13:58:03 Webmama_Tina hello spirit
13:58:19 Webmama_Tina we are just wrapping up our chat w/sarojni
13:58:31 Sarojni this is what i did in my bedroom...on a budget!  i stood in the room, studied the structure (size, windows, closet location etc.), then let my mind see" a finished look.  i then went on a hunt to garage sales and found everything for great prices.  i bought a floor lamp, a nice shade ($1.00), an easy chair w/ foot rest (10.00) and some beautiful curtains that i draped around my room to create a flowing feeling.  also put a couple candles out and some pictures on the walls."
13:58:34 Webmama_Tina 2min left, according to my clock :)
13:59:23 Sarojni thanks everyone for the great questions.  please visit my website www.sarojnimehta-lissak.com or come to www.natural-family.com for more ideas!
13:59:34 Webmama_Tina thankyou so much sarojni!
13:59:44 Webmama_Tina this was such an awesome topic to discuss!
13:59:55 Webmama_Tina i really appreciate you taking your time for us. :)
14:00:15 Sarojni my pleasure!
